چکیده

Web proxies and Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) are widely used to accelerate Web content delivery and to conserve Internet bandwidth. These caching agents are highly e ective for static content, which is an important component of all Web-based services. This paper explores the e ect of ubiquitous Web caching on the request patterns seen by other components of an end-to-end content delivery architecture, including Web server clusters and interior caches. In particular, object popularity distributions in the Web tend to be Zipf-like, but caches disproportionately absorb requests for the most popular objects, changing the reference properties of the ltered request stream in fundamental ways. We call this the trickle-down e ect. This paper uses trace-driven simulation and synthetic trafc patterns to illustrate the trickle-down e ect and to investigate its impact on other components of a content delivery architecture, focusing on the implications for request distribution strategies in server clusters.

On Request Forwarding for the Dynamic Web Caching Hierarchies

To enhance the performance of Web caching, we proposed a dynamic Web caching hierarchy scheme based upon the Caching Neighborhood Protocol (CNP) [1][2] to facilitate establishing flexible cooperation partnerships among the Web origin servers and proxy servers. One of the key issues to the success of using CNP for the Web caching is request forwarding, i.e., to which destination server a client-...

Exploiting Regularities in Web Traac Patterns for Cache Replacement

Caching web pages at proxies and in web servers' memories can greatly enhance performance. Proxy caching is known to reduce network load and both proxy and server caching can signiicantly decrease latency. Web caching problems have diierent properties than traditional operating systems paging , and cache replacement can beneet by recognizing and exploiting these diierences. We address two aspec...
